At the Adventure Travel Trade Association we are proud to work within a community where a philosophy of sustainability is core to the business of our members.
Our members are committed to celebrating and protecting our world’s precious resources through responsible adventure tourism focusing on cultural heritage, natural assets, biodiversity, and wildlife. We have been at the forefront of promoting this ethos in travel and tourism for more than twenty years. We take the climate crisis no less seriously than the conservation challenges we have met head-on in the past.
Our thoughts, planning, actions, and collaborations are guided by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aiming to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure all people enjoy peace and prosperity. We reference the Brundtland report’s definition of sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”
While striving for a whole-systems approach to sustainability, we also recognize that what is critical in one part of the world is not necessarily in another; demands and needs in Europe are different from demands and needs in Asia, for example. The same holds true in local communities and the dynamics of their own history, culture, environment, and unique place in the world.
As a global organization with a responsibility to lead our community in facing global challenges and the climate crisis together, we have defined the following Sustainability and Policy Objectives and Goals to help enable change and create impact locally:
MEASURE and REDUCE
LEAD and PARTNER
INSPIRE and ENABLE
Reducing 5% to 10% average emission per delegate each year for the next five years
1% for the Planet (certified) and B Corp (certification by 2026)
Achieve a formal commitment to sustainability by 100% of our membership by 2026
In 2024, taking its commitment to sustainability further, the ATTA will create a Sustainability Fund to support its carbon reduction efforts alongside its ongoing commitment to climate education and innovation through Tomorrow's Air. We will work closely with our partner and destinations to reduce event emissions commiting a 5% to 10% reduction in our per delegate emissions in this first year.
Every ATTA event supports climate education, carbon removal through permanent storage and sustainable aviation fuel. The Sustainability Fund will be made by contributions coming from ATTA's events and projects worldwide.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals serve as a source of inspiration and guide our endeavors. Our actions not only exemplify the goals but also empower our members worldwide to actively contribute and create a positive impact on a global scale.
The Adventure Travel Trade Association is committed to making sustainability simpler, more affordable, and more accessible through a global network of resources, toolkits, and partners.
The Sustainability Resource Center is the dynamic platform provided by ATTA for the adventure travel community, offering opportunities to explore and acquire knowledge in sustainability.
Scientists agree that we need emissions reductions of 30 gigatons a year and carbon dioxide removal in the range of 5 - 30 gigatons per year by 2050. Tomorrow’s Air, the flagship climate initiative of the ATTA, is an industry-first collective dedicated to educating, inspiring and mobilizing people to travel climate conscious, reduce travel’s carbon dioxide emissions and clean up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Every payment received supports climate focused travel education and funds the scale up of cutting-edge technologies that help reduce carbon dioxide emissions through sustainable aviation fuel and carbon dioxide removal with permanent storage. There were 900 million travelers in 2022; with millions more on the horizon, there’s no doubt that travel represents a potentially massive force for climate. Imagine the impact we could have if we all came together to help ramp up these necessary innovations alongside nature conservation and emissions reductions.
In 2016, the Adventure Travel Trade Association, in collaboration with fellow leaders in the adventure travel sector, established the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund.
At the heart of the ATCF lies the strong conviction that travel has the power to protect and conserve, empowering every traveler to become a steward for the planet.
ATCF's mission is to directly fund local projects engaged in the conservation of unique natural and cultural resources of adventure travel destinations.
1% for the Planet connects businesses and individuals worldwide to support environmental solutions through yearly donations. The program provides a mean to aid nonprofit organizations by contributing to Environmental Partners, selected based on recommendations, their past efforts, and their focus on the environment.
As a part of ATTA’s efforts to promote sustainability and conservation, ATTA has chosen the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund (ATCF) as their valued nonprofit partner to receive 1% of their contributions.
